Cyprus is a sovereign Republic with a presidential system of the government. The legal system established after independence by the island in 1960 based on the English common law system is now being fully aligned with the law of the European Union (since 2004 Cyprus has been part of the EU).
The government of Cyprus officially encourages foreign participation in the economy, which undoubtedly promotes business activities by foreign corporations and individuals.
